Jojoba

Simmondsia Chinensis

Jojoba Oil is a gorgeous, silky carrier oil with barely any scent. It is popular in skincare because the makeup of the oil mimics the skin's natural oils, therefore leaving you less prone to breakouts. It complements and mixes well with most essential oils on the market and absorbs into the skin quickly.

History of Jojoba Oil

Jojoba Oil has been used for hundreds of years, with Native Americans grinding Jojoba seeds (from the Simmondsia chinensis tree) into a paste to use as a topical medication for the skin and hair. They would heat the seeds until they became soft, which made them malleable to either create a rough paste or a refined oil. Jojoba Oil was mostly used in the past as a skin and hair salve, and today is widely used either as a carrier oil with essential oils, or, on its own as a skin and hair care treatment.

The composition of Jojoba Oil is very similar to the natural oils that our skin produces, which makes it perfectly placed for those who suffer with excess oils, or are reluctant to use oils on the skin because it causes breakouts. Jojoba Oil today is a great alternative to other carrier oils on the market which could potentially cause irritation or skin blockages. Overall it improves the look and feel of skin and hair, whilst also reducing the appearance of blemishes. Jojoba Oil has nearly all the vitamins and minerals required for healthy skin and hair!

So, what does the future look like for Jojoba Oil?

The future looks incredibly bright. Jojoba Oil is one of the most popular carrier oils that you can own, and we’d go as far as saying that this should be an essential oil to have in your collection. Not only does it dilute essential oils and create beautiful blends, but it is also an amazing oil to own for use on its own, particularly if you struggle with sensitive or acne-prone skin.

Jojoba Oil is a widely accessible carrier oil, and doesn’t have an expensive price point - making it well placed for those on a budget. A little goes a long way with Jojoba Oil, and you can extend the life of your essential oils by diluting them using Jojoba Oil. Its faint scent won’t affect the blends you make, instead, it will nourish your skin and hair whilst leaving you feeling moisturised (and if you’ve mixed with an essential oil) smelling gorgeous!  Jojoba Oil is popularly used either as a standalone ingredient or as an extract in a number of high end skincare products, including oils, balms, cleansers and eye creams!

Extracting Jojoba Oil

Like most essential oils on the market, Jojoba Oil is extracted using a process called cold pressing. The nuts, seeds and beans from the jojoba plant are put into a cold presser which will use extreme pressure to squeeze the oil out from the solid. This is done in cold temperatures and no heat is applied to the beans, nuts or seeds, as it can damage the overall quality of the oil. Overall, this is the best method to extract Jojoba Oil as there is a high yield of oil without compensating on the quality. It is one of the few carrier oils that can only be extracted using this method.

Can I make Jojoba Oil at home?

Yes, you can. Providing you have access to a small cold press, jojoba seeds and enough space to do the process - you can make this oil in the comfort of your own home. One important factor to think about is if you’re buying or harvesting fresh jojoba seeds, you’ll need to let them dry for at least two weeks before you begin the extraction process, as this is when they will produce the highest volume of oil overall. If you don’t have the equipment or patience (or time) to make the oil, it is still a very accessible carrier oil which is affordable, so you may prefer to just buy the oil instead!

Jojoba Oil Varieties

Jojoba Oil Varieties

There are a few different varieties of Jojoba Oil available, however they are determined by location rather than by botanical name. The botanical name, Simmondsia chinensis is what Jojoba Oil is known for, but based on our research there are Argentinian varieties of the oil as well as Israeli. The biggest producers of Jojoba Oil are Argentina, Israel, the USA and Mexico - so the varieties will be geographically sensitive. The Argentinian version, also known as “Golden Carrier Oil” is known for being one of the best carrier oils on the market. It is excellent for skincare and overall is a highly desired variety of Jojoba Oil to own. The other variety from Israel can be clear and deodorized and is still popular in skincare and cosmetic production, and it seems that on a commercial scale this is the most desirable variety.

So, which variety should I use?

Although most Jojoba Oil varieties seem to have similar properties, it’s clear that the leader is the “Golden Jojoba Carrier Oil” variety. However, with carrier oils, it’s important that you find a variety that works for you. We recommend, where possible, to try out a couple of varieties as you may find that some are better suited to you than others. Whenever you are buying a carrier oil, make sure that it is “100%” and not mixed with alcohols or other oils, as you may not feel the full benefits of the carrier oil if it isn’t completely pure.

What do you think of Jojoba Oil? Is it an essential in your collection? Is there a particular variety that you prefer? As always, our team loves to hear from you and how you’re getting the most out of your collection. So, feel free to reach out and share your stories today.
