Yuzu

Citrus Junos

Yuzu Oil is a citrus essential oil which is likened to Bergamot Oil in terms of its properties. It works as an effective anti-ager and has a high content of vitamin C, making it popular to use as a brightening remedy in skincare.

History of Yuzu Oil

Yuzu, also known as Citrus Junos, is a hybrid citrus fruit which has been around for thousands of years. It originated in China and then spread to Korea and Japan around the 8th century. It’s a small fruit which has many similarities to grapefruit, and the oil as well as the juice of the fruit is used extensively throughout eastern Asia. The fruit is incredibly nutritious, and although it isn’t a commonly known fruit in the western world, it’s considered a staple for many - as similarly to other citrus fruits and oils, they can be used for many things and have a lot of beneficial properties. The scent is incredibly fragrant and has been likened to grapefruit as well as bergamot. It’s quite an expensive essential oil in comparison to many other citrus oils on the market, and the reason is because of how scarce it is. You could argue that on a global commercial scale, there isn’t enough appetite for it in comparison to the vast majority of other citrus oils available (bergamot, lemon, lime, grapefruit etc).

The fruit cannot be imported into many states in the USA, and in the UK and some countries in Europe it can only be accessed in restaurants or specialist shops - and even then the price tag is pretty high! There are very limited farms in Australia, which further ties into why Yuzu Oil can be more expensive.

So, what does the future look like for Yuzu Oil?

The future definitely looks bright, however in comparison to a lot of essential oils on the market, Yuzu Oil for many is still quite difficult to access. With legalities stopping the buying, selling and growing of yuzu in some countries, we imagine that it’s still going to take some time until the fruit and oil can be accessed by everybody around the world. However, as an Australian business we are incredibly proud to be able to stock this oil, as for those who can get their hands on it are in for a treat when using it topically or in aromatherapy; we absolutely love it! If you ever have a chance to experience yuzu, whether it’s the oil or the fruit - we urge you to give it a try, you definitely won’t be disappointed.

Extracting Yuzu Oil

Like many other essential oils on the market, particularly citrus fruits, Yuzu Oil is extracted using a method called cold pressing. This involves putting the rinds under extreme pressure, which then extracts the oil from the porous surface. It’s a common method used with citrus oils in particular, as well as nut and seed oils. Commercially, Yuzu Oil isn’t made by many countries due to restrictions when it comes to distribution. The oil is also difficult to obtain due to the fact that there aren’t high volumes of yuzu grown all over the world. This is why the oil can be expensive to produce, and you’ll find that it’s one of the most expensive citrus oils when compared to others on the market.

Can I make Yuzu Oil at home?

Unfortunately, this is one of the very few oils that you cannot make in the comfort of your own home. Even if you’re in a country where it’s legally possible to grow yuzu, you’ll still struggle to have enough peels to make the oil yourself from scratch. Due to its scarcity, we recommend buying the oil instead of trying to make it - as you’ll have much more success that way. We hope that the accessibility of making the oil improves in the future, but for now, we recommend buying from a high quality distributor that supports local farms that grow yuzu. We stock Yuzu Oil here at Essentially Yours!

What do you think of Yuzu Oil? Is it an essential in your collection? As always, the team loves to hear how you’re getting the most out of each oil you own. So, feel free to reach out and share your stories with one of the team today.

Yuzu Oil Varieties

Yuzu Oil Varieties

In terms of the varieties of Yuzu, there are not clear distinctions between varieties that are used to create the oil, however there are ornamental/fragranced varieties that can be found in Japan. We can assume that there are multiple varieties of Yuzu available, but in terms of the oil, the botanical “Citrus Junos” is the only variety known so far. Because of its scarcity, there may be more varieties which are discovered in the future - and the moment we know, we’ll update this blog, so stay tuned if you want to continue learning about the varieties of Yuzu Oil!

So, which variety of Yuzu Oil should I use?

As mentioned, there are no distinct varieties of Yuzu Oil due to the scarcity of it. However, if you’re looking to obtain Yuzu Oil and you’ve never bought it before, we have a few things for you to consider. Firstly, make sure that you’re buying from a reputable seller.
